Moonwalk Lesson (Rigo Style), 2006
Slide projection, b&w, 5:00 min.

Contrary to what is commonly assumed, the Moonwalk (or Slide Step) was not invented by Michel Jackson in the early 1980’s. There are at least a couple of known inceptions before the time. One of them is attributed to popular Mexican singer Rigo Tovar (1946-2005) who incorporated it to his stage dancing in the early 1970’s. During that time Rigo did the step tuned to his cumbia music in front of huge masses of people.
Moonwalk Lesson (Rigo Style) is a 37 slide show which documents a group of art students teaching themselves the dancing step.

Mario Garcia Torres (Mexico, 1975) received an MA from the Universidad de Monterrey, and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Some of his recent solo shows are: Te Invito a Mi Mundo, Jan Mot (Brussels) and Paradoxically, It Doesn’t Seem That Far From Here, Meyer-Riegger (Karsruhe). Among recent group shows are Elephant Cementery, Artists Space (New York); The Last Piece by John Fare , gb agency (Paris); Otra de Vaqueros, Laboratorio Arte Alameda (Mexico City); The Moscow Biennial (Moscow); Saturday Live Actions and Interruptions, Tate Modern (London). Among upcoming shows during 2007 are Think with the Senses – Feel with the Mind. 52 Biennale di Venezia (Venice), and solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and Kadist Art Foundation (Paris).
